Fish and plants are cultured. That's pretty much what we know about Aquaculture, right? I always hear “Wow these plants and fish are being caught and sold all the time”. In fact aquaculture is the number 1 food sector in economy.
Aqua means water and culture means breeding of plants and animals. That can give you a good idea of what aquaculture is. Aquaculture is breeding of plants and animals in water. Often people mistake aquaculture for agriculture. The difference is aquaculture is in water and agriculture is on land.
Scientist say that this all started over 1,000 of years ago with the Ancient Chinese who collected fish in ponds for growth. Scientist Mark Swan says, “Our world is becoming bigger and better. I'm not so sure this Aquaculture thing is going to hold up. Technology is getting better and better. There could be a stop of culturing fish”. Swan has been studying the growth of sea life and aquaculture for 30 years now. He believes that the way of aquaculture will not stop per say but will change because of our technology today. A easier ways of culturing fish electronically is his thinking.
Aquaculture is a huge industry in our world today. Will it hold up though? Or is Swan right? The technology is getting better and such. We'll just have to wait and see.
